Alaska Run for Women 2011

For nine years Murray Orthodontics has been a proud sponsor of The Alaska Run for Women. Every year the entire Murray Orthodontic Team organizes and sets up a tent to disperse free sno-cones to the participants of the Alaska Run for Women. It is one of our favorite events and we look forward to it every year. This year there were a record 7,100+ entrants.

Teen Underground at Loussac Library

You may have not heard about this new addition to the Lousaac Library. Murray Orthodontics is a proud sponsor of this new facility for anchorage teens. The new Teen Center is a space especially designed and designated for teens. The center has many new technological gadgets to utilize and a teen centered book library. Anchorage Downtown Rotary decided to raise money and create this space after anchorage teens were asked what they most wanted. Dr. Murray’s wife, Vivienne, who is a member of Downtown Rotary, was a member of the organizing committee to make the Teen Center a reality for our teens. Mighty Mites Ski Racing

: Coach John’s Mighty Mites Team

Dr. Murray was the proud ‘Coach John’ of many Mighty Mite Ski Racing athletes this year. In Dr. Murray’s early years he spent many hours on the slopes in the North East ski racing. He has loved the sport ever since and loves to coach the Alyeska Mighty Mite up and coming ski racers. He says he “ likes to teach the younger racers because he can still keep up with them – barely”.

Salmon Run 2011

Another running event Dr. Murray loves to sponsor is ‘The Salmon Run’. This run is geared towards active family fun. The run is a 2K, 5K, 10K race that starts and finishes in downtown Anchorage. There also has a children’s carnival. The 5K and 10K is a timed event but the 2K is just for fun with a medal given out to participating runners/walkers

Rotary Youth Exchange

Dr. Murray is an avid supporter of Rotary Youth Exchange. His family has hosted high school children from all over the world – most recently a Brazilian exchange student, Julia. If you have friends or family that are interested in participating in this wonderful program let Dr. Murray know. He believes these students are a wonderful role model for his own children. Plus, he secretly wants them to go on an exchange program overseas.

Anchorage School District Sonic Boom

In May Dr. Murray’s daughter, Katherine, participated in the 6^th grade Sonic Boom concert at the Sullivan Arena. It was Dr. Murray’s first time experiencing this incredible event and wanted to do a shout out to ASD and all the teachers that made this opportunity available to the Anchorage 6^th graders. What a fantastic experience for these children. Well done Anchorage School District!

Nordic Ski Jumping

Recently Dr. Murray and his family have become involved in Nordic Jumping. Nordic Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined is the oldest Nordic Skiing competitive sport in the world. In Anchorage, we are lucky enough to have Nordic Ski Jumps at Hilltop Ski area run by Anchorage’s very own NSAA. In the past the area has produced a U.S. Olympian, Alan Alborn. But recently the program has lost steam. Dr. Murray is hoping to help bring the program back to its former glory in preparation for the 2013 Junior Olympics that will be hosted in Anchorage in 2011. Stay tuned for upcoming news about this wonderful sport.
